Great bar with an even better atmosphere. Live music and chill staff. What more could you ask for?!?

This place has incredible music - I go almost every Sunday for the Sea Monsters and if I didn't have to get up so early on Thursday morning, I'd go see The Rex Complex more often on Wednesday nights. The patrons are a very friendly crowd and the staff are friendly. I've only eaten here a few times and it has been good food - fairly standard Irish Pub menu.

Chris Trapper concert at Precinct Bar on Saturday, Oct-25 at 8pm. It will be a special show ... in such a groovy, intimate setting, and we'll get to listen to the songs from the new CD. It will be so much fun and I am such a big fan of Chris' music! See you there!

Having lived in union square for a few years now, I have enjoyed seeing numerous fantastic bars, restaurants and shops appear in addition to the fantastic places which were already here. I've heard it said that union square is the most diverse place in boston, and this is evident in the variety of restaurants and grocery stores found here. When I saw that 'Toast Lounge' had been renovated and renamed 'Precinct Bar', I looked forward to checking out the newest addition to the square. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed as I think 'Precinct' represents a decidedly negative addition to Union Square. Rather than appealing the the eclectic crowd 'toast' seemed to attract, Precinct is a cliche "lounge" that seems like it might be more at home with the bars next to Quincy Market or as a half-ass addition to Landsdown Street. Housed in a the former somerville police station, one walks down a half level to enter the bar. This creates an entrance pit that doubles as the smoking area, and given the crowd this bar seems to be attracting, my experience of pushing though a group of guys in ambercrombie polos and backwards baseball caps might be typical. The actual renovation of the bar looks good, with a bar with numerous televisions (that apparently will be showing all sporting events) in front and a room with a stage in the back. I didn't eat here, but they have an "Affordable American" menu, which, in reality, is mid to high priced for bars in cambridge/somerville. As mentioned in a previous review, the beer list is good, though it doesn't even begin to compare the the bar/restaurant located two doors down. The best part of my hour there was spent listening to a good band they had playing in the back; the worst part was dealing with their staff. Though I was there on a weeknight, the bartenders and "bouncers" seem to wish they were working in a pretentious club rather than (what is billed as) a chill lounge. This goes beyond being generally unfriendly; when I went to the bar, the bartender seemed to be actually be trying to start a fight/confrontation with no provocation. After he walked away, I looked at the people siting next to me to confirm that this was really happening, and they were surprised "..at what a dick he was." Hopefully enough loud, rowdy, obnoxious patrons will show up to give the staff something to do. Given the atmosphere and the type of people they have employed, maybe they will even get to have some fights on the weekends to keep them busy. Maybe they can start advertising to the undergrads on the other side of the river to come have an adventure in somerville, and that will really spice things up. Hopefully the generally chill people that live in union square will stay away, or else the staff will be bored out of their minds and will have to resort to starting something in an attempt to justify their meathead existence. I'm hoping this place doesn't last 6 months. If you live here, stay away, there are better places to go. If you live somewhere else and are thinking of heading over to union square to check this place out, don't. And if this sounds like the type of place you are looking for, well....sad. But come and see the rest of union square, as this is a great little corner of boston.

The Nog is back! Having been shut down early in '07, it has taken up residency in Somerville's former police station. Only the location has changed; the people and music have remained the same. Definately a hidden jewel in the entire Boston Area!
